The Associated Press is reporting (via Fox News):
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 rattled a group of Japanese islands in the Pacific Ocean south of Tokyo early Tuesday, Japan's weather agency said. No tsunami warning was issued. The quake struck at about 6:18 a.m. (2318 GMT) and was centered near the Ogasawara island group, about 483 miles south of Tokyo, the Meteorological Agency said.
The quake was extremely shallow, said agency official Toshiyuki Suzuki. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the quake, he added.

Let me save the trolls some trouble...this is all W's fault. Or we're driving too many SUV's. Or both.

My thoughts and prayers for those affected.
6.8 was the intensity of Northridge, if memory serves correctly, so it's pretty big.

And close to the 6.7 in Hawaii last week. Couple this with the MT St. Helens mini eruption and you never know something could be coming.

OTOH, I question the timing.
North Korea tests a bomb, and a week or so later, Japan (with extensive technical expertise, oil drilling ability, and plenty of plutonium) suffers an earthquake?
Isn't that convenient?
No, I'm not being serious---but one of these days, the Japanese may well have a shallow earthquake that looks awfully funny on a seismograph.
