It sounds like it happened so fast that no one could do anything to stop it.
BRISBANE, Australia (CNN) -- "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin, the Australian naturalist killed by a stingray on Monday, was videotaped pulling a poisonous barb from his chest just before he died, according to news reports.
Irwin's manager John Stainton, who was among the television crew on the reef, said the accident was caught on videotape. He described the footage of his friend dying as "terrible."
"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him (in the chest), and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone," Stainton said.
"That was it. The cameraman had to shut down (after that)," Stainton said. Stainton will talk more about the footage on "Larry King Live" tonight at 9 p.m. ET.
I saw Steve's show several times but wasn't a regular viewer. However, every time I saw it I learned something new.
I have noticed a few people throughout the 'sphere compare Steve's death to Grizzly Man's, but I don't see any similarity at all. The Grizzly Man was a nut who actually thought he could live with grizzly bears safely. Steve, on the other hand, was completely aware of the danger involved in his profession. I remember on at least one occasion when I saw his show, after he had just wrestled with a crocodile, warning his viewers to never try to get too close to wild animals themselves, that what he and his cohorts were doing was very dangerous.
Last night Animal Planet had a marathon showing of the Crocodile Hunter and I caught one show. I turned it on just in time to see Steve Irwin, at another place and time and completely unaware of the fate waiting for him on September 4th, 2006, say that he would want to be remembered as passionate and a conservationist.
I'd say his wish is being honored.

It may have been unfair spin in the documentary, but the Grizzly Man seemed to me to know the danger he faced and to have committed suicide by Grizzly.

My condolences to Steve’s family and friends. I remember the first time I saw Steve on TV. He was chasing some animal that went up a tree and Steve went right up after it without a moment’s hesitation. I figured he was high on something, but realized later that it was life Steve was high on.
Divers wear weight belts to achieve neutral bouncy under water, but given the dangers, it seems chainmail would be a better source of weight.

Could not filming of this wild animal been done without swimming with it? was there a need for a adrenaline rush?
What is sad is that it could have been prevented. Steve gave little regard to wearing safety gear while handling wild animals. You can only mock death so many times.
Ya know, there are policemen and firemen and people in the military who risk their lives on a daily basis to protect & serve mankind.

The Fact that he got the spine in the chest is the biggest factor in his death, had he got it in any other body part he most likely would have been fine, unless he was allergic to the "poison" in the rays sting.

The first few times I saw Steve, I was shocked. I had never seen anyone handle snakes the way he did, and thought he must be insane just for what he was doing, not to mention the wacky way he went about it. We've all seen other people dangling cobras by the tail since then, I guess, but it was astonishing to see it for the first time. Steve played that gutsy and his exhuberent style for all it was worth, and made a positive difference for animal conservation in his short career. Attaway, mate!

I definitely think the video of Steve's tragic death should be made public. First, I think Steve would have wanted his last moments to be seen by his fans and second and most importantly, his tragic demise can serve as an educational tool to divers and the like, which shows what can happen when potentially dangerous, albeit normally inoffensive creatures, are approached. As Steve always made clear ('don't try this at home') there are risks, however small they may be, when one approaches animals that sting or bite. It is important to be aware of what can happen when dealing with normally docile but always unpredictable creatures in the wild.

VagaBond, have you not paid attention at all? He wasn't trying to swim with the stingray. He was filming coral sequences for his daughter's show...he had no intention of messing with any animals at that time. The stingray was hidden in the sand, like they do, and he swam over it, causing it to strike him.
Could've happened to anyone swimming there...he wasn't being reckless.

Hello Terry and Children ,
God will help you get threw this rough time in your life . Put just remember don't question the man up stairs for why Steve passed just remember that all the things that steve did to save an animal and its good things that came from Steve threw your life and what he helped you achived in your life with him. Two wonderful children and a wonderful father in law ... Steve changed the world and the people in it ... some people look at everyday ordeals with animals that they live with and their fears ... to over come them ...
I wish you all the best and prayers are with you and your's

Hello All:
I thank all the posters here--Knowing others share the loss my hubby and I felt when we heard the news and that others also felt Steve was a great, passionate man and conservationist as well (also some facts pointed out about coming upon the stingray by accident, while filming the coral for the special) makes the stunning shock feel somewhat more palatable for coping.
I appreciate that Terri shared her deep faith in getting through this tragic accident.
We all miss you Steve and my heart goes out to Terri and their wonderful children. May God keep Steve's family close and give them and all who mourn a peace that passeth all understanding that can only come from Him... in Jesus' name I pray --I have prayed this prayer for this peace for my own personal things difficult to bear and found that a profound sense of peace amongst the storms of life became more manifest to me --even to my surprise as heartbreak and deep sorrow can feel unending and all-consuming.
For me, this prayer brings a sense of peace even though I still get a lump in my throat and my eyes welling up with tears that stream down my face for the loss of this great person from our world as we experience it ....and yet somehow I sense he will never be truly gone.
Steve, your light will forever shine in all our hearts and souls. Much love to your and yours.

Steve Irwin was legend to me ever since I was a little girl. He was always a brave man. Crazy as anyone, but very brave. It's tragic, no one really would have been surprised if he'd been bitten by a snake, or by a croc, but the fact that a stingray got him... it was truly a freak accident. I hope his soul rests well.
