The other day, Wizbang reader "jhow66" noticed that another commenter's name seemed new, but his words had a familiar feel. He thought "Larry" sounded a bit like "Lee."
I thought jhow might be on to something, so I started poking around behind the scenes.
A short aside: we don't require commenters to register here at Wizbang. It's Kevin's decision, but it's one I wholeheartedly support. One of the drawbacks, though, is that it is very easy to abuse that system and engage in "sock-puppetry" -- using multiple names to support one's positions to convey more support than is actually present. It's a hot-button issue with me.
Anyhoo, I did some checking, and "Larry" had never posted from "Lee's" IP -- and neither had "Lee" ever posted from any other IP. Case closed.
Whoops, let's not close that case just yet.
"Larry" is a bit more prolific than it seems. In that thread, his IP posted as "Larry." On this thread yesterday, that IP posted as "Hugh." He was also "Hugh" on this thread and this one, where he was also "Michael." He was a bit less formal here, when he was "Mike."
I'm not going to ban his IP, because I really, really don't like doing that. But I am going to publicly ask him to just pick a single name and stick with it.
And before anyone else can beat me to it...
BLOOD FOR ODIN!!!!!!!

That's that bad. Sock puppetry is the domain of people who either don't have a valid argument or who can't adequately debate.

Maybe thats why the election results are always so different than polls that quiz the same person, 6 times, with multiple alias's.

Lee, if more people were comming to their senses, there would be less left leaning idiotic posts, not more. Just an example of the continuation of the lie, a national commentator on a cable new program argued that Saddam had no connection to 9/11 or the terrorists responsible. Discounting information that Atta met with Iraqi intel agents prior to 9/11 from both the country of origin and military intel, documents found in Iraq indicate there was a connection. But you would rather believe there was no connection because you hate Bush and information that a President was doing his job makes your hate wrong.

I guess I simply don't understand why it's fine to use a single anonymous nik, but some sort of monster evil to use two or three. Folks, *what difference does it make*?
I mean, when someone breathlessly announces that they've [gasp!] found two posters with the same IP, my initial reaction is that they've found a guy who - like me - sometimes finds it impossible to keep straight all the zillions of addresses, names, emails, and passwords he's using for the bazillions of websites he's frequenting.
But what really bugs me is this fucktard *a priori* assumption that "catching" someone using two niks is perfectly equivalent to bravely and brilliantly destroying their arguments. "Hahahaha! I'm only using *one* anonymous handle! You're using *two*! I win!!! Toppa the world, Ma!!!"
Dumb.
Folks, stop breathlessly peeking at IP addresses and start addressing people's arguments, regardless of how many identities Secret Squirrel appears to have.
