A bit more detail has come out about the shooting at Puzzles, the gay bar in New Bedford, MA.
Apparently 18-year-old Jacob Robida went into Puzzles with a fake ID. He ordered a drink, asked if it was "the gay bar," then attacked a pool player with a hatchet. When other patrons attempted to stop him, he pulled out a gun and started shooting. By the time he fled, five men were wounded -- three seriously.
Police managed to identify Robida as a suspect, and found his Myspace page (which I couldn't find myself). There they found all sorts of Nazi insignia, along with a proclamation that "I'm interested in death, destruction, chaos, filth and greed." He also goes by the charming nicknames of "Serial Killa," "Jake Jekyll," and "Nazi."
His mug shot's been circulated up and down the East Coast, and I hope the cops find him soon. And as I said yesterday, I really, really hope he resists arrest. If this twisted little shit somehow doesn't make it to trial, I would have a hard time shedding a tear.

While I agree that he should be punished severely, I think it's a bad idea to wish that he resists arrest, only out of concern for the safety of the police that will be taking him in.

You mean all gay bar owners and patrons in Massachusetts haven't apologized for offending Mr. Robida's sensitivities? Where is the multiculturalism, where is the sensitivity to those with different views?

Some may recognize this as a line spoken by young nazi Edward Furlong in American History X. That movie, oddly, is very popular among neo-nazis despite its overall message.

How does an 18-year-old end up being served 2 drinks in ANY bar in Massachusetts? The heinousness of the crime here will overshadow the lax enforcement of the liquor laws at this bar, unless it has a deep pocketed insurance company.
If it does, I expect it will be sued out of existence as the bar owners appear to share some culpability here. After all, if they had properly requested this Nazi's "papers," he'd have never been in the joint long enough to ask whether he was in a gay bar.
One also is left to wonder this: I've tried to sneak a cigarette into 3 bars in Massachusetts and was set upon by "puff police" within 4 seconds all three times. So how, exactly, did our 18-year-old budding Hitler manage to bring in, unobserved, both a gun AND an axe?
Fake IDs are only useful when bar owners aren't really interested in whether their customers are 21 or not. The Massachusetts driver's license, for example, has not-easily-faked holographic images on it, and like a credit card, can be scanned to ensure that it is not fake.
(Incidently, in Massachusetts, only a Massachusetts license is acceptable ID when entering a bar. You cannot, for example, get into a Massachusetts bar with a New Hampshire license.)
Oh, and FWIW: Massachusetts Nazi's are no more or less repugnant that those in New Hampshire.

Different kinds of bars maybe? In any case, it was a hatchet, not an axe. One could easily conceal both a hatchet and an gun inside a coat (it is presently cold in Mass., right?). Shall bars frisk their patrons upon entry?

Jay isn't saying either is better or worse, he was using a quote from the Blues Brothers; when Jake and Elwood are fleeing the cops (the eighth time or so), they run into a neo-nazi march, and Jake comments: "I hate Illinois Nazis." All of us here in Illinois concur with those wise words of Joliet Jake.

Reminds me of a guy from New York attending U. of Michigan. His fake ID was a Michigan license. It worked perfectly well in New York, but not in Michigan, because it looked nothing like a real license.

Also, I think the puff police in a bar like Puzzles were looking for something other than cigarettes.
