Two editorials today take up the question of Osama bin Laden's curious silence.
Michael Ledeen, in The National Review Online and Peter Brookes in The New York Post both discuss the topic today. Ledeen reports that Iranians he trusts say bin Laden died in December 2005 in Iran.
As Brookes says, "rarely have the hard facts of life and death been so favorable to the spread of democratic revolution."

I happen to know that our military is positive he is still alive. I know that a statement like that just screams for verification or at least some background, but I just can't give it.

There are many Michael Ledeen statements that scream for verification! For some unexplained reason I've just never trusted what the man has had to say on most subjects.
I think "old wiley Osama" is "boogying" along the lawless Pakistan border somewhere. That, or thanks to a couple of Daisycutters, he's buried under millions of tons of a Tora Bora mountain. Just a guess, though.

I believe OBL has been dead since late 2001, buried in rubble at Tora Bora. Although I find it odd the only time he has appeared since 2001 is for an October surprise Bush campaign commercial. Maybe he's working in Langley.

Ledeen writes bin Laden "died of kidney failure and was buried in Iran."
Iran is believeable and bin Laden dead something to be wished for, but if you haven't read Richard Miniter's DISINFORMATION (22 Media Mythis That Undermine the War on Terror) do.
He devotes one chapter to bin Laden's supposed kidney problems. Nothing Miniter found in his research indicates bin Laden ever had kidney problems.
It's an excellent read.

Someone recently asked me what I thought was going through Osama's mind during the last round of elections in Iraq.
I replied, "Worms."

Ledeen's statement also screams for verification, and I wish he could give it.

That'd be the Langley O'Your Mind, eh, John S?
But it's an interesting fantasy, nonetheless. I'd like to see that occur, and the sooner the better. Alive or dead.
