The National Weather Service posting was so strongly worded some didn't believe it was legit:

MOST OF THE AREA WILL BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS...PERHAPS LONGER. AT LEAST ONE HALF OF WELL CONSTRUCTED HOMES WILL HAVE ROOF AND WALL FAILURE. ALL GABLED ROOFS WILL FAIL... LEAVING THOSE HOMES SEVERELY DAMAGED OR DESTROYED. [Gables did you say? I have 3 of them. -ed]
THE MAJORITY OF INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS WILL BECOME NON FUNCTIONAL. PARTIAL TO COMPLETE WALL AND ROOF FAILURE IS EXPECTED. ALL WOOD FRAMED LOW RISING APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL BE DESTROYED. CONCRETE BLOCK LOW RISE APARTMENTS WILL SUSTAIN MAJOR DAMAGE...INCLUDING SOME WALL AND ROOF FAILURE.

AIRBORNE DEBRIS WILL BE WIDESPREAD...AND MAY INCLUDE HEAVY ITEMS SUCH AS HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES AND EVEN LIGHT VEHICLES. SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND LIGHT TRUCKS WILL BE MOVED. THE BLOWN DEBRIS WILL CREATE ADDITIONAL DESTRUCTION. PERSONS...PETS...AND LIVESTOCK EXPOSED TO THE WINDS WILL FACE CERTAIN DEATH IF STRUCK.
POWER OUTAGES WILL LAST FOR WEEKS...AS MOST POWER POLES WILL BE DOWN AND TRANSFORMERS DESTROYED. WATER SHORTAGES WILL MAKE HUMAN SUFFERING INCREDIBLE BY MODERN STANDARDS.
THE VAST MAJORITY OF NATIVE TREES WILL BE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED. ONLY THE HEARTIEST WILL REMAIN STANDING...BUT BE TOTALLY DEFOLIATED. FEW CROPS WILL REMAIN. LIVESTOCK LEFT EXPOSED TO THE WINDS WILL BE KILLED.
And that does not include the part about the city being under 30 feet of water.
Thanks to various commenters who wanted to make sure I didn't miss that! Thanks guys I needed that! ;-/

If you haven't even been though a category 4 or 5 storm you have no idea what it's like. You may thing you do but you don't. I've ridden out several lesser storms here in Mexico and 2 4's and 1 cat5. My house here is steel reinforced concrete and I doubled everything. I doubled rebar size and concrete thickness everywhere and then increased the number of bars used. I learned that lesson with my first house here, Roxanne erased it down to the floor. I went through Gilbert on Cozumel and had to wait two weeks until they repaved the runways before I could fly out, they pavement literally blew away. I'd sure hate be relying on a roof with the span of the Superdome to stand up to winds 20 miles per hour faster than they were designed for with the increased load of heavy rains for shelter. I'll ride out a 4 here and not sweat it too much but when a 5 comes along I get the hell out.

I was wondering about the design limits for the Superdome. It's a concrete roof, right?

The news says its designed for 130 mph winds, and the official name for it is "a point of last resort", they are already avoiding calling it a shelter. Even if it handles the hurricane winds it won't handle and tornados that Katrina kicks up. I have no idea if that rating is wind only or if it includes 130 projectiles too. About the only damage I get here now is from coconuts and they only damage the solar panels and sometimes bend the shutters. If it wasn't over 6 miles to my nearest neighbor I'd have to worry about parts of his house hitting mine too but New Orleans doesn't have that luxury.

Dude, sounds like you have quite a setup. On the coast and 6 miles to anyone else? Wow.

I have the United Nations to thank for that. I'm in the Si'an Ka'an biosphere and since the UN started regulating what can be built and what can be done nobody can afford to build. I'm grandfathered in so I do pretty much whatever I want to do and only have to fight them over it about 15 times a year. They have home size tied to meters of beachfront and there just aren't that many people out there willing to pay $2 mil for land then only be allowed to build a 1050 sq ft. home. That size includes all structures like garages and generator buildings. Their rules include little things like you cannot burn your trash but there is no dumpground within 50 miles to take your trash to, nice little things like that. I end up fighting with them every year when they try to revoke my rights but if I manage to hold on long enough they'll rewrite the rules, on both sides of my property there are big stretches that belong to some of the owners of the biggest resort hotels in Cancun. Of course I'm assuming that the UN is corrupt and will change the rules for bribes. I've heard rumors that they do things like that.

I've heard the Superdome may be built to withstand winds of over 200 mph, but that was when it was built. I wouldn't want to trust it now, 30 years later.

They are nesting every night right now. They will be until about the end of the first week of September. Also have Mexican Marines Patrolling the beach to protect them/steal as many as they can themselves right now.
