Which means, by simple arithmetic, that the archtype of the older woman was younger than I am now.

Heavy smoker. Hate to be the one to write this, but she was a heavy smoker, and for all her life.

A great lady, who didn't get famous by marrying "a Tom Cruise" or dating "a Brad Pitt" or smashing papperazzi cameras, or being seen drunk and staggering out of a bar.
She became famous just for being an excellent actress!
Recomended viewing: I've seen THE MIRACLE WORKER, THE GRADUATE, THE ELEPHANT MAN, FATSO, TORCH SONG TRILOGY, 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD, and GARBO TALKS. I liked all of these films.
I never saw THE TURNING POINT but I heard it was pretty good.
NOT recomended!: TO BE OR NOT TO BE. (avoid this turkey)

She also had a small but well done performance in 1993's "Malice", as the mother of Nicole Kidman's character. The movie wasn't for everyone's taste, and could have been better, but I enjoyed it.
And if I--at my current age--were to hit on her at the age she was when she did "The Graduate" I'd be called a dirty old man. And Mel Brooks would probably attack me in the shower with a rolled up newspaper.
